The Japanese liner Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) claims to have conducted the world’s first test of an autonomous container ship.
The M/V Mikage ship, built in 2015 and operated by Imoto Lines, was tested on the 24th and 25th of January. The ship set sail from Fukui’s Port of Tsuruga and arrived at Tottori, a few kilometers away, on a pre-planned route.
The voyage utilized Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding’s autonomous vessel operation control system which took into account a number of variables, including the vessel’s location, external elements such as wind, waves, and ocean currents, as well as navigation rules.
The test was part of the Nippon Foundation’s autonomous ship project, which also tested an autonomous ferry earlier this month.
