For Spain, an agreement between the EU and Mercosur is a priority

If there was a contest to elect the European government most interested in seeing a free trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur, Spain would be one of the favorites. Naturally linked to South America by historical and cultural factors, the Iberian country also has an economic relationship with the five members of the South American bloc, which makes it an unconditional ally of the treaty’s defenders.
Spain’s Vice Minister of Commerce, Xiana Méndez, told Valor that the firm defense of the agreement is due to “rational” analyses based on data. This indicates that it is a treaty that benefits all involved and creates patterns of sustainable development like no other international trade initiative.
Xiana Méndez recognizes that the agreement will need to be resilient and did not venture to say when it could be ratified. But she stressed that she will insist that it not be reopened and that it remains a priority on the European agenda. “We are not going to let the agreement process drag on forever, or even worse, get pushed to the back burner.
The deputy minister defends Brazil, which has been a protagonist in the resistance created by countries like France due to controversies related to environmental protection and the Amazon. For her, there is a communication problem, but that does not mean that the country is no longer a reference in environmental legislation.
Méndez also says that Brazil is a priority for investments by Spanish companies. She believes that despite the turmoil and forecasts for a shrinking economy in Brazil next year, it is necessary to analyze the scenario more objectively to avoid wasting good opportunities.
