The Australian company Fortescue announced on Wednesday (17) that earthmoving work for the green hydrogen plant in the Pecém Complex is set to begin by the end of this year. The company emphasized that the project has received board approval for an early investment and is currently in the feasibility phase. Fortescue highlighted that the Pecém Project is a global priority, aligned with its goal of decarbonizing the industry.

According to the statement, Fortescue is completing the fine print and adjusting the engineering project, which is crucial for prepping the space for a green hydrogen plant, ensuring compliance with all socio-environmental regulations. Additionally, the company is discussing further details with current and potential suppliers to continue moving forward with the process of contracting local services and products.

“We are confident, and I can say with great pride that Ceará is leading the green hydrogen revolution. Governor Elmano de Freitas has made a personal commitment to us, and our state is distinguished not only by its privileged geographic location but also by its capacity for innovation and commitment to sustainability. We are investing in advanced technologies and strategic partnerships to position Ceará as a national and global leader in the production and use of green hydrogen,” said Salmito Filho, Ceará’s Secretary of Economic Development.

“Brazil has made significant progress in regulating an industry that will lead the way in national decarbonization and energy transition, fundamental steps towards the green neo-industrialization of the Brazilian economy. The H2V value chain spans the entire country and will benefit several industrial sectors, such as fertilizers, cement, steel, and aviation. Brazil is on the right path,” stated Sebastián Delgui, Fortescue’s regional manager of Government Relations for Latin America.

The project

The Fortescue plant will be developed in Sector 2 of EPZ Ceará in three phases: Phases 1 and 2 – 1,200 MW and Phase 3 – 900 MW. The project has the potential to produce 837 tons of green hydrogen per day from the consumption of 2,100 MW of renewable energy. According to the Environmental Impact Study, the project is expected to generate around 5,000 jobs during construction.
