SBM Offshore has announced the arrival of the floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel Alexandre de Gusmão at the Mero Field in the Santos Basin pre-salt area on Tuesday, March 4 (04/03). The vessel departed from the COSCO Shipping (Qidong) Offshore shipyard in China and will be SBM’s ninth FPSO operating in Brazil. The first oil from the FPSO, located approximately 190 kilometers off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, is expected later this year.

The FPSO has a production capacity of 180,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) and gas compression of 12 million cubic meters daily. The Mero Field is operated by Petrobras (38.6%) in partnership with Shell Brasil (19.3%), TotalEnergies (19.3%), CNPC (9.65%), CNOOC (9.65%), and PPSA (3.5%), representing the Brazilian government in the non-contracted area.

Last October, SBM also announced the arrival of the FPSO Almirante Tamandaré, which has a production capacity of 225,000 bpd and 12 million cubic meters of gas. It is the first FPSO in Brazil to operate with the Sustainability-1 notation issued by Bureau Veritas, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Equipped with cutting-edge technology, Almirante Tamandaré operates in the Búzios Field in the Santos Basin, off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. On February 15, the FPSO began production.

Together, the two FPSOs, chartered by Petrobras, mark a new phase in the history of oil exploration and production. They increase national oil output and represent a significant milestone in SBM Offshore’s operations in Brazil.

“We are committed to investing in Brazil, the company’s primary market worldwide, and contributing to the development of the oil and gas sector. Currently, SBM Offshore-designed and/or owned units account for about 17% of Brazil’s oil production, reaching 30% with the new units in operation,” said Jonas Lobo, SBM’s General Manager in Brazil.
