France bans imports of meat from animals treated with antibiotics

On Tuesday, February 22, France published a decree that bans meat imports from animals treated with antibiotics – a practice banned in the European Union since 2006 – mainly affecting the poultry market.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture, France is preparing for an EU-wide measure that was supposed to go into effect at the end of last month but was postponed due to a lack of legislation on health inspections.
The French ban will go into force on April 22, giving the market two months to prepare and publish a document proving that the meat was not raised with antibiotics, giving operators time to change their supply chain if necessary.
The ministry said that by administering antibiotics when the animals are not sick, the bacteria get used to the drug and gradually develop resistance, making the antibiotics less effective when needed.
According to a French Agriculture Ministry official, the prohibition will have the most significant impact on the poultry business.
The EU mainly imports poultry meat from Brazil, Thailand, and Ukraine. It was not immediately clear how much imports could be affected by the ban.
