Frost affects coffee, sugarcane, corn, vegetables, and pastures in São Paulo

In São Paulo, coffee plantations were heavily compromised by last week’s frosts, but there were also losses in sugarcane, corn, vegetables, and pastures, according to a survey by FAESP (the SP state federation of agriculture and livestock (Faesp). Damage to coffee plantations occurred in 10% to 20% of the main growing areas.
Although the losses caused by frosts in the central-southern region of Brazil are still being accounted for – Minas Gerais and Paraná also had significant losses – the low temperatures in the country took Arabica coffee prices to a new level in the domestic and foreign markets.
See below the main destinations for Brazilian coffee below. Data are from DataLiner:

According to FAESP, in São Paulo, the damage was greater in new coffee plantations, but there was also damage at more mature plantations. This “should have repercussions in lower grain yield and quality in the next harvest”, says the entity, which reported intense cold in different regions of the state on July 19th and 20th.
