The Paranagua Container Terminal (TCP), located in the south of Brazil, handled an impressive mark of 6,915 frozen beef containers between January and May 2023, up 52% from the same period last year.
According to the company that manages the terminal, 50% of the beef cargo that uses Paranagua as an outlet goes to China, corresponding to 93,655 tonnes. TCP also said that “export volumes are expected to increase thanks to the lifting of the Chinese embargo on Brazilian beef, in addition to new permits granted to several Brazilian meatpackers.”
To meet the growing demand for animal protein exports, TCP has invested in expanding its reefer area, where temperature-controlled containers are plugged into the electricity system. Giovanni Guidolim, TCP’s commercial, logistics, and customer experience manager, issued a note saying, “The number of outlets in the reefer yard will increase from 3,572 to 5,126 by the end of 2023, an 43% surge. We also built an energy substation to support the expansion.”
According to the company-issued note, frozen beef was the Brazil-based terminal’s most handled product, involving over US$ 2.23 billion in transactions from January to April, an increase of 44% compared to the same period in 2022. “As for the same period last year, chicken meat corresponded to 80% of the terminal’s movement, crowning TCP as the most important export corridor for this type of cargo in the world.”
