Fruit exports from Brazil dip in 2022, says Conab

Brazilian fruit exports are down. The export volumes of bananas, oranges, apples, papaya, and watermelon dipped significantly this year, according to government data released by Brazil’s Foreign Trade Secretariat and analyzed by the National Supply Company (Conab).
“This is directly related to the downturn in the global economy generated by measures to control inflation,” said Sérgio De Zen, director of Agricultural Policy and Information at the state-owned company, on LinkedIn.
From January to September, shipments of oranges reached 270 tonnes, around 92.2% less than the total exported over the same period of 2021. However, Conab sees a more favorable scenario for Brazilian sales next year due to problems in Florida’s orange crop, which was harmed by greening and the passage of Hurricane Ian.
In the case of apples, shipments decreased by 64.7% in volume to 34.89 thousand tonnes. On the other hand, apple imports totaled 2,630 tonnes, a rising trend likely to continue due to low domestic production and high prices of local varieties.

Banana exports fell by 13.4% to 69,950 tonnes by September this year. Conab mentions that exports started at a high in the first quarter, but began to decline from the second quarter onwards, not only due to lower domestic production but also due to the competition with other producing countries.
Papaya sales abroad totaled 31,040 tonnes in the year’s first nine months, down 19%. Low investment in the crop in recent years has limited supply, and the incidence of rain has slowed the fruit harvest.
Brazil also shipped 54,120 tonnes of watermelon this year, a volume 1.5% lower than the total seen for the same period in 2021.
