Brazil exported 515,600 tons of fruit in the first half of this year, 29% more than in the same period in 2020, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture compiled by ABAFRUTAS (the Brazilian association of exporters of fruit and its derivatives). Revenue grew 40% to $440.1 million.
The increase in consumption of healthy foods that occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic was one of the factors behind the increase, says the president of ABAFRUTAS, Guilherme Coelho. “The world has been looking for healthy foods with vitamins and minerals, and it is found in fruits”, he says. The increase in the dollar, which makes Brazilian exports more competitive, also boosted shipments.
The chart below was compiled using DataLiner data and shows Brazilian fruit exports since January 2019:

According to data compiled by ABAFRUTAS, 85% of exports are destined for the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States. As production and exports tend to be more voluminous in the second half of the year, Coelho believes that the country’s sales to the foreign market may reach the mark of US$ 1 billion by the end of this year.
Bahia, Pernambuco, Ceará, and Rio Grande do Norte dominate Brazilian exports, exporting 70% of the total. Among the fruits with a volume of more than 10,000 tons shipped, one of the highlights in the first half was grapes. In the year-to-date total between January and June, Brazil exported 21,740 tons, more than double the 10,340 tons during the same period last year
