The community formed around public port management company Portos do Paraná received a detailed briefing on Monday (20) on the steps towards developing a Decarbonization Plan, a project spearheaded by Fundación Valenciaport. This initiative, part of the Brazilian Alliance for Port Decarbonization, aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
Portos do Paraná officially partnered with Fundación Valenciaport in 2020, signing a cooperation agreement with the Spanish research and innovation center, recognized globally for its expertise. The plan’s development reflects increasing inquiries from international clients, particularly Europeans, about the port’s carbon footprint.
“We are frequently asked by international clients, especially Europeans, about our carbon footprint, and, today, large multinationals keep this perspective in mind. We, at Portos do Paraná, alongside our partners at the Port of Itaqui, are promoting this campaign with the aid of Fundación Valenciaport to meet international standards,” emphasized the CEO of Portos do Paraná, Luiz Fernando Garcia.
Key figures from Fundación Valenciaport, including Josep Sanz Argent, Director of Energy Transition and Sustainability, Jonas Mendes Constante, Director of Projects and Innovation and Port Strategy Consultant, and Senior Consultant Jussara Neto Mendes, outlined the main objectives of the decarbonization plan. They also discussed the ongoing efforts at the Port of Valencia in Spain, which aims to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2030.
Argent emphasized the collaborative nature of the project, saying, “We contribute to the decarbonization plan by sharing our experiences and lessons learned.” The project, expected to take 20 months to complete, aims to calculate CO2 emissions across all port logistics in Paraná and develop decarbonization strategies in collaboration with port stakeholders.
“The first day of visits by the Fundación Valenciaport team was key as we observed strong support from the port community,” noted João Paulo Santana, Director of Environment at Portos do Paraná. “It was an opportunity for them to understand the upcoming demands that will follow this week’s technical visits by the Spanish institution.”
Jonas Mendes added, “Our team will spend this week visiting companies and terminals within the port community, presenting our data requirements, and collecting information. This hands-on approach will enable us to soon present a comprehensive calculation of the carbon footprint for the entire port complex managed by Portos do Paraná.” The technical visits will continue until Friday (24).
