Furniture and mattresses exports grew 8.8% in 1Q22

In March 2022, Brazil exported nearly US$71.6 million (FOB) in furniture and mattresses. Although this figure indicates a 3% decrease compared to March 2021, a great year for exports of furniture and mattresses, exports in the quarter (January to March) increased 8.8% from 1Q21. As for the last 12 months, the variation observed in the Brazilian furniture sector was 42%.
These figures can be found in the reports developed by IEMI – Market Intelligence exclusively for Abimóvel (Brazilian Furniture Manufacturers Association), which, in partnership with Apex Brasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency), is responsible for the project “Brazilian Furniture.” This initiative aims to increase exports and internationalize national designs and the furniture industry.
Product Lines
Wooden furniture represented 82.9% of exports among all product lines. Upholstered furniture was the second-most exported furniture category, with an 11.6% share. Finally, mattresses and metal furniture had a share of 2.8% and 2.7%, sequentially.
In terms of month-to-month comparisons, two segments stood out compared to their results in March 2021. They are: upholstered furniture, +30.8%; and metal furniture, +18.9%. Only two categories of products did not grow during the period, mattresses (-9.4%) and wooden furniture (-6.7%). However, it is worth noting that these two lines of products were the object of unusually high demand in the past two years, both domestically and abroad, which explains why the consumption stabilized now in 2022.
Destinations of furniture and mattresses exports
The United States continued as the leading destination for furniture and mattresses shipped in 1Q22, with a share of 35.4%. Chile remained in second place, as the destination for 8.2% of the sector’s exports, followed by the UK, with 8.1% of the total exported.
Month-on-month, French and Germany both stood out by growing by 90.6% and 100.7%, respectively.
With regard to the main origins of Brazilian exports, the three states in the southern region are the ones with the largest output. Together, Santa Catarina (37.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (31.1%), and Paraná (15.0%) corresponded for 83.5% of national furniture exports in the first quarter of 2022.
