General Cargo and Containerized Freight Volume Increases in November

Port operations in Brazil reached a year-to-date total of 1.2 billion tonnes of cargo from January to November 2024, according to the Waterborne Statics report by the National Agency for Waterway Transportation (ANTAQ). In November, the total volume handled stood at some 100.6 million tonnes, down 5.21% from the same period in 2023.

Despite the overall drop, some cargo types exhibited positive variations. Petroleum coke posted the highest percentage growth, surging by 80.94% to 0.7 million tonnes. Coal increased by 32.22% to 1.7 million tonnes, while wood pulp rose by 26.65% to 2 million tonnes.

In November 2024, both general cargo and containerized freight saw notable growth. General cargo jumped by 21.57%, reaching 5.7 million tonnes, while containerized freight grew by 5.93%, handling 11.6 million tonnes, or 1.1 million TEUs. Of the total, 0.8 million TEUs were for long-haul shipping, and 0.3 million TEUs were for cabotage. Containerized freight maintained a steady upward trend throughout most of the year.

Solid bulk totaled 59.6 million tonnes in the bulk cargo segment, marking a 5.40% decline, while liquid bulk reached 23.7 million tonnes, down by 13.79%. In terms of transportation modes, long-haul shipping accounted for 74.3 million tonnes, cabotage handled 22.5 million tonnes, and inland navigation moved 3.7 million tonnes in November.

Public ports handled 34.6 million tonnes in November 2024, an 8.35% decrease compared to the same period last year. Among the top 20 ports in the country, the Port of Santarém (PA) stood out, handling 0.9 million tonnes—an impressive 97.41% increase over November 2023.

At private terminals (TUPs), total cargo volume reached 66 million tonnes in November, a 3.47% decrease from the previous year. However, the Ponta Ubu Maritime Terminal (ES) saw a remarkable 70.96% growth, handling 1.1 million tonnes during the month.
