In October, the container terminal at the Port of Salvador – a port logistics hub in the North and Northeast – registered a growth of 18.5% in general cargo handling compared to the same period last year, setting a new monthly record of 39,000 TEU handled. The result surpasses another milestone reached in the first semester this year when the port registered the highest monthly volume of containers handled since the beginning of its activities a little over two decades ago. Compared to October 2020, exports grew 18% (11,100 TEU), imports grew 24% (7,700 TEU), while in the year, cabotage operations rose 6.4% (63,500 TEU).
The main shipments in October were in the Solar Energy (+1.585%), Polymers (+36%), and Civil Construction (+78%) segments. “As another highlight this month, we received the first shipment of rails for the West-East Integration Railway FIOL (EF-334), imported from China. The first ship unloaded 20,035 tracks destined for section II of the railway, and two more ships are expected this year”, recalls Demir Lourenço, executive director of Tecon Salvador, a business unit of Wilson Sons.
From January to October of this year, Tecon Salvador also registered an increase in cargo handling, with 317 thousand TEU handled, an increase of 11.8% YoY. In 2020, the volume registered was 283,600 TEU..
