GLO Operation Commences in Rio and São Paulo Ports with Navy and Port Authority Cooperation

On the first day of the GLO operation in the ports and airports of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, a legal provision that allows the Brazilian government to deploy the military and other security forces to maintain law and order in specific situations, Navy commanders gathered on a ship in the Port of Santos with representatives from the port authority and other law enforcement agencies that will be part of the task force against organized crime.
“The action must be effective but subtle to not affect exports and imports. Companies operating at the Port of Santos support the measure and have advocated for energetic actions to combat trafficking. Still, GLO cannot disrupt logistics,” said Anderson Pomini, an attorney and President of the Port Authority of Santos, to CNN.
According to Pomini, the operation is still being structured, and troops, boats, and vehicles are still arriving in Santos.
The use of the Port of Santos by drug trafficking factions, according to Pomini, causes losses to exporters.
“A company ships large quantities of cellulose pulp to the Middle East. Because it starts its journey from the Port of Santos, there are stricter product inspections. This increased scrutiny can cause disruptions in the logistics process,” explained Pomini.
