Global pork exports set to fall as China imports 39% less

Farmers in China are producing so much pork this year that it is shaking up global animal protein exports.
As the Asian nation’s hog farmers are growing more productive this year, the country is likely to import 39% less pork, while Hong Kong buys 21% less, the US Department of Agriculture said on the 12th in a quarterly report. China is the world’s biggest meat importer, and the purchase drop points to an “increasingly bleak” outlook for farmers worldwide.
“The sharp drop in demand from China leaves major exports, such as the EU, Brazil, and the USA, looking for other markets to export and compensate for the decrease in trade levels,” mentions the report.

The shift in trade could ultimately lead to lower consumer prices, alleviating the worst food inflation seen in decades.
