Last week, Gás Natural Açu (GNA) began work on the GNA II thermoelectric plant, the second thermal plant at Porto do Açu, in the north of Rio de Janeiro. In parallel, the company is negotiating possible supply contracts to sell surplus gas originating from the regasification vessel (FSRU) BW Magna — which is also responsible for supplying gas to the thermoelectric complex in Açu.
The announcements were made by the president of GNA, BernardoPerseke, during the opening ceremony of UTE GNA I, Açu’s first thermal power plant. The GNA II plant will have 1,627.6 megawatts (MW) of capacity and is expected to start operating at the end of 2024. After the entry into operation of the second unit, the complex will be the largest in Latin America in terms of thermal energy generation and will have an installed capacity of 3 gigawatts (GW).
According to Perseke, the forecast is that the works of the new plant will generate around 12,000 jobs, even more jobs than the first. “We are going to prioritize local labor and suppliers, just as we did for the first thermal plant. About 15,000 employees will pass through GNA II, with a peak of nearly 6,000 workers,” he said.
GNA is a partnership between Prumo, responsible for Porto do Açu, BP, Siemens, and the Chinese company SPIC.
