The federal government has suspended the import tax on eight drugs used to treat various types of cancer including leukemia, lymphoma, breast, and lung cancer, and other diseases such as anemia, multiple sclerosis, and atopic dermatitis. The measures were approved on October 14th by GECEX (the executive management committee of MINFRA’s foreign trade chamber), and are contained in GECEX Resolution No. 265 published in the Official Federal Gazette (DOU) on October 20th.
In addition to these drugs, equipment used in surgical procedures on the hip and knee, such as a robotic arm and handpiece for bone resections, also had their import tax suspended.
The change in the import tax was made through the inclusion of these products in Mercosur’s LETEC (the Brazilian list of exceptions to the common external tariff). The measure takes effect seven days after publication in the DOU for an indefinite period.
