A Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA) ordinance establishes procedures that must be observed to assess the impact of the opening of the Brazilian market for the import of agricultural products.
According to Ordinance No. 133, published in the Federal Gazette on May 24, the Secretariat for Agricultural Defense will be in charge of setting the sanitary, phytosanitary, and safety requirements required for the import of agricultural products.
The Department of Trade and International Relations will be the competent body to assess the economic and commercial impacts, as well as the impacts on international relations that may result from the opening of the Brazilian market for these products.

The ordinance also details the processes that deal with the “potential opening” of the Brazilian market for agricultural products. It stipulates that the Secretariat for Agricultural Defense should forward the processes to the Secretariat for Trade and International Relations – through the Electronic Information System or another official electronic system in force – with a summary of the technical discussions and the decisions on sanitary, phytosanitary, and health requirements which will be established to open the Brazilian market for imported agricultural products.
