Ronaldo Caiado, Governor of Goiás, has signed a memorandum of understanding with representatives from Açu Port to promote exports of Goiás-based farming products to other regions of Brazil and international markets.
The agreement was signed during the Central Brazil Governors’ Forum, held at the Central Brazil International Trade Fair (Ficomex) in Goiânia, which concluded on August 29 at the Goiânia Convention Center.
On the occasion, Caiado emphasized the importance of forging logistics partnerships to seek new ways of distributing Goiás’ agrarian goods. “This is beneficial for Goiás. This infrastructure can serve many companies in the state.”
In March, Deputy Governor Daniel Vilela, along with a delegation of business leaders and directors from the Association for the Industrial Development of Goiás (Adial), visited the company’s logistics center. “The partnership between Goiás and the Port of Açu not only strengthens our commercial ties but also opens new doors for foreign trade, facilitating the export of products from Goiás and expanding the relevance of our state on the global stage.”
Secretary-General of the Government, Adriano da Rocha Lima, explained that the next step is to study the feasibility of exporting through Porto do Açu and gather data to assess competitiveness. “Goiás is crossed by several railways, some still under construction, which facilitates access to ports in both the Southeast and Northeast of Brazil.”
“The partnership between Goiás and Açu Port is of great significance to Goiás’ agribusiness because increased efficiency in these operations directly strengthens our rural producers and drives the success of our economy,” said Pedro Leonardo Rezende, Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply.
Located in São João da Barra, in northern Rio de Janeiro, Porto do Açu is Brazil’s only fully private port, with investments totaling R$ 20 billion. In addition to its strategic location, the port benefits from international partnerships and reduced bureaucracy for client operations.
Rogério Zampronha, president of Porto do Açu, highlighted the port’s advantages in collaborating with international ports and simplifying processes for its clients. Zampronha also noted that the port is well-equipped to serve a growing number of producers from Goiás, who are already exporting corn, soybeans, and copper concentrate through the facility. “We offer various opportunities for agribusiness, with an average wait time of just two days.”
Memorandum of Understanding
The two-year memorandum of understanding aims to facilitate the exchange of information and the coordination of strategic research efforts to improve the efficiency of cargo movement to and from Goiás. The goal is to identify the best logistical and infrastructure solutions for integration with Porto do Açu.
To conduct the study, the Government of Goiás has established a working group (GT) comprising representatives from the state and Porto do Açu. This group, made up of officials from the Government Secretariat (SGG), Agriculture Secretariat (Seapa), Infrastructure Secretariat (Seinfra), Environment Secretariat (Semad), Goiás Infrastructure and Transport Agency (Goinfra), and the Mauro Borges Institute (IMB), has around four months to present a final report with conclusions and recommendations.
