Gov’t investigates dumping claims in exports of polyester fibers from Asia to Brazil

The Foreign Trade Secretariat of Brazil’s Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services (MDIC) has initiated an investigation to assess the existence of dumping in the exports of polyester fibers from China, India, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand to Brazil. The agency has found indications that such practice is currently harming the local industry. Dumping involves exporting products at prices below those practiced in the domestic markets of a given country.

According to a note published on Thursday, the 21st, in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU), the investigation originated from a complaint filed by the Brazilian Association of Producers of Artificial and Synthetic Fibers (Abrafas) at the end of October 2023. MDIC notified the governments of the mentioned countries about the investigation on March 15th.

The document mentions dumping margins of US$ 467.64 per ton of the product in the case of China, US$ 459.43 in shipments from Malaysia, US$ 385.25 in sales from Vietnam, US$ 288.64 in exports from Thailand, and US$ 206.93 in the case of India.

“During the analyzed period, Brazil’s total volume of polyester fiber imports increased by 42.1%. Imports from the investigated origins increased significantly by 52.2%, according to the MDIC.
