Green ships gain priority for docking at the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina

Sustainable ships, known as green ships, now have priority at the ports of Paraná. This initiative is part of a new regulation on Ship Schedules, Operations, and Berthing—2023 Edition, which came into effect in February. It aims to promote the use of vessels with energy structures that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Luiz Fernando Garcia, CEO of Portos do Paraná, explains that this priority berthing grants preferential dock space regardless of the ship’s arrival order. “The rule aims to attract sustainable ships to Paranaguá, aligning with our goal to lead in sustainability and environmental processes,” he emphasized.
João Paulo Santana, Director of Environment, highlighted that this measure reinforces the public company’s commitment to the 2030 Agenda and its sustainable development goals, particularly in the port sector. “We are not only working to decarbonize Paraná ports but also encouraging more environmentally friendly ships to come to the state,” he noted.
Gabriel Vieira, Director of Operations at Portos do Paraná, added that this measure aims to motivate companies to invest in reducing CO2 emissions. “This regulatory change has increased the efficiency of sustainable ship operations, attracting more green ships to Paraná ports,” he said.
Sustainable Actions
Portos do Paraná is Brazil’s only public port administrator invited to the annual United Nations climate change event, the COP (Conference of the Parties). Additionally, the company has partnered with the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands to develop renewable energy in the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina.
The memorandum signed in 2023 outlines cooperative actions to make Paraná ports more sustainable, focusing on reducing carbon use and investing in new energy systems, such as green hydrogen and wind power.
This initiative is part of the Green Ports Partnership collaboration program, set to last three years. Portos do Paraná also holds Ecoports certification, an international standard in port environmental management.
