Green vessel Pyxis Ocean arrives at Port of Paranagua

A hot topic on the seas since its departure from Shanghai, China, at the beginning of August, the bulk carrier Pyxis Ocean is set to enter Paranaguá Bay this Friday (15). The Port of Paranaguá will be the first in Brazil to receive the vessel. In the Paraná port, recognized for its infrastructure and innovative capacity, the ship will be loaded with 63,000 tons of soybean meal.

The ship, chartered by Cargill, is being hailed on its maiden voyage because it employs metallic sails, which can help reduce emissions by up to 30%. This system could be a major game-changer in the future of commercial shipping.

The technology, called BAR Tech WindWings, was developed by BRA Technologies in partnership with Yara Marine Technologies, with support from the European Union. It aims for innovation, cost-efficiency, and a reduction in pollutant emissions. BRA is involved in nautical projects, including experience in ocean racing, such as the America’s Cup.

In May of last year, the Port of Paranaguá had already received the MV Afros, also a bulk carrier that used rotating sails to assist in propulsion and reduce fuel consumption. Savings can reach up to 12.5% thanks to the rotors that spin with the wind and aid the vessel’s propulsion. Like the Pyxis Ocean, it has a combustion engine, but in this case, it can operate with less power and consume less fossil fuel.

Portos do Paraná is a signatory of the UN Global Compact and has been striving to attract vessels that align with efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “We are delighted to welcome this new vessel, the result of our commercial productivity and internationally recognized environmental commitment,” said Luiz Fernando Garcia, CEO of Portos do Paraná.

EXPORT CORRIDOR – The operation will take place in the Eastern Export Corridor of the Port of Paranaguá, which, in the first eight months of this year, handled 15.3 million tonnes of grains (soybeans and corn) and soymeal. This movement represents a growth of 17.5% compared to the same period in 2022. In terms of soybeans alone, the Export Corridor shipped 9.2 million tonnes, almost 26% more than in 2022. Likewise, soybean meal saw a 5% increase and corn an 8.5% increase, demonstrating the efficiency of Paranaguá’s port infrastructure.
