Green vessel Pyxis Ocean sets sails from Brazil’s Paranaguá Port

The vessel Pyxis Ocean, owned by Mitsubishi Corporation, docked at the Port of Paranaguá on Sunday (24). Known for being a “green” vessel, it boasts 37.5-meter-high metallic sails and made its first call to Brazilian shores. Chartered by the multinational Cargill, it will transport 63,000 tonnes of soybean meal destined for Poland.

The Pyxis Ocean’s technology, called BAR Tech WindWings, was developed by BAR Technologies in partnership with Yara Marine Technologies and Mitsubishi with the support of the European Union. The new system aims at bringing innovation and saving costs while reducing emissions of pollutants. Parana-state governor Carlos Massa Ratinho Junior visited the ship last week.

The operation took place in the East Export Corridor of the Port of Paranaguá, which, in the first eight months of 2023, saw a throughput of 15.3 million tonnes of grains (soy and corn) and soybean meal. This movement represents a 17.5% growth compared to the same period in 2022.

During the same period, the East Corridor shipped 9.2 million tonnes of soybeans, an increase of almost 26% compared to 2022. Soybean meal also experienced a 5% growth, and corn saw an 8.5% increase.

According to the Director of Operations, Gabriel Vieira, “We have received the Pyxis Ocean on other occasions, but without the metallic sails. Currently, no other vessel has this mechanism, which saves tonnes of fuel on a 40-day journey. The cargo operation was divided among five terminals and, after loading, proceeded to the port in Gdynia, Poland.”
