Hapag-Lloyd to implement surcharge over drought on Panama Canal
Dec, 01, 2023 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202344
Hapag-Lloyd has announced a surcharge on cargo transportation due to the drought effects at the Panama Canal, resulting in draft limitations.
“Confronted with the most severe drought the Panama Canal has faced in fifty years, we are actively refining our operational strategy to facilitate cargo planning. The drought has exerted a noteworthy influence on container ships, imposing draft limitations that impact space and weight allocations. Furthermore, the daily transit of ships has been constrained to a specific number per day, introducing additional complexities for navigation through the Panama Canal, as communicated by the company.” the company stated.
As a response, the Panama Canal Surcharge (PCC) will be implemented, effective from January 1, 2024, at the rate of USD 130 per TEU and EUR 120 per TEU.
“Despite our preparations, canal restrictions pose uncertainties, and, therefore, we are continually assessing the operational situation, including regular discussions with authorities to obtain the latest information,” emphasized Hapag-Lloyd.
