Hidrovias do Brasil to increase operational capacity in so-called ‘North System’

Hidrovias do Brasil, a logistics solutions company, was the winner of a simplified selection process held by port authority Companhia Docas do Pará (CDP) for the zoning and use of an area available in the mirror of water, with over 61,000 m², for the transshipment of solid vegetable and mineral bulk operations at the public port of Vila do Conde, Barcarena, Pará.

With this move, the company will have an estimated operational capacity of about 8 million tonnes per year in Brazil’s so-called North System starting in 2024. The volume to be handled in the new area should correspond to approximately 700 thousand tonnes per year. A temporary use contract will be signed between Hidrovias do Brasil and CDP upon the presentation of all necessary licenses and authorizations. The contract has a duration of four years, with the possibility of renewal for the same period.

Hidrovias do Brasil’s CEO Fabio Schettino highlights the company’s commitment to strengthening its operations: “This move is in line with our strategy of modular capacity increment in the North logistical corridor, with low investment needs and short-term returns, complementing the current operations of our Private Use Terminal (TUP) in Barcarena, increasing our operational strength in the region and without generating idle capacity,” analyzes the executive.

The company has a strategy of continuously investing in the North System to increase operational efficiency further. Only this year, the company launched operations with a 35-barge convoy, increasing transportation capacity by 40%, and received two new trunk pushers and two electric pushers to expand and modernize its fleet in the region.
