High-Level Talks Aim to Attract Maersk’s Aliança Help in Revitalizing Port of Natal

Revitalizing the Port of Natal by attracting maritime transport companies to operate at the Rio Grande do Norte’s capital was the main topic discussed on Wednesday, December 6, in a meeting between high-ranking officials of Fiern, Governor Fátima Bezerra, and the regional coordinator of Maersk, Giselmo Félix, at the Governor’s Office. The meeting also included the director of FIERN and president of the Union of Recycling Industries of RN (SindRecicla-RN), Etelvino Patrício, the deputy secretary of Economic Development, Sílvio Torquato, government economic officials, and the technical director of the Port Company of RN (Codern), Paulo Henrique.
“The Fiern industry federation wanted to present Aliança Maersk, a shipping company that could potentially bring operations back to life in the Port of Natal,” said Roberto Serquiz. He explained that the federation has been working to invigorate and facilitate activities at this port terminal, allowing industrial export-oriented companies to have a shipping option without the need to operate in ports in neighboring states.
“We know that Agrícola Famosa has expressed interest [in operating at the port]; we have been in talks with other shipping companies; and today was the day to present Maersk’s Aliança,” explained the president of FIERN. He also brought attention to the fact that there is a state government project for the installation of a ‘Green Industry Port’ on the coast, near Caiçara do Norte, and other possibilities for port terminals on the coast of Rio Grande do Norte. Nevertheless, urgent measures are needed to revitalize the Port of Natal, as it is the only currently available terminal.
“We have prospects for new ports. But we need to think about making the current port more active. For this, it is necessary to boost infrastructure, continental logistics, build defenses on the bridge, get more the cranes, etc. All these situations require the support of the Public Power, especially the federal government. And there is alignment between the federal and state governments, so this dialogue is necessary,” noted Roberto Serquiz.
“The meeting was very positive,” said FIERN director Etelvino Patrcio, “as the governor expressed a willingness to work together, in a joint effort of the government and Codern.” We understand that there is a strong desire to actively participate in putting measures in place to make coastal shipping viable in Rio Grande do Norte,” he said.
The governor also regarded the meeting as positive. “The group came with FIERN, we had the presence of Codern, and we, as a government, made it clear that we will do everything in our power for this company to establish itself in Rio Grande do Norte,” stated Fátima Bezerra.
“We have immense potential in this area to revitalize the port’s role in various production chains, hence the importance of a company of Maersk’s caliber coming to the state to increase logistical capacity and bring development, generating employment, and improving the quality of life for our people,” emphasized the governor.
