High-tech pieces of equipment are the most imported items in the healthcare industry, emphasizes the executive president of ABIMED, Fernando Silveira Filho. The report “Setorial 21”, which analyzed data between 2018 and 2021, shows that devices and components related to diagnostic imaging, orthopedics, the cardiovascular area and surgery led imports in the period, representing 93% of the volume and value. The surgery segment was responsible for about 31% of annual external purchases, followed by diagnostic imaging and orthopedics (about 25% each) and cardiovascular (12%).
When it comes to Brazilian imports of medical devices, the ABIMED study shows that, in 2018, the market moved approximately US$ 25.2 billion, growing by about 1% in 2019, when the value reached US$ 25.5 billion. In 2020, there was a decrease of 3%, totalling US$ 24.7 billion. For 2021, the expectation is that value will decrease by 0.9%. The basis of the estimate is the history of previous years, calculated using the CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) methodology, totalling US$ 24.4 billion.
Regarding ‘Value of National Production’, the study shows a constant annual decrease in the period. In 2018, the amount represented US$ 2.6 billion. In 2019, after falling 3%, it reached US$ 2.5 billion. In 2020, there was a sharp reduction of 40%, with a drop to US$ 1.5 billion. Estimates for 2021 point to another decline, of 10.7%, with the value reaching US$ 1.3 billion.
The domestic market has been able to meet the demand. As a result, imports mainly concentrate on high-tech components and equipment produced abroad, such as chips and spare parts.
