The Port of Pecém concluded this Tuesday (01) the largest steel plate operation in its history. More than 72,000 tons of slabs were shipped on a single ship, a record volume that consolidates the Ceará port terminal as one of the most dynamic and effective ports in Brazil.

Produced at the steel plant installed in the Export Processing Zone (ZPE) of Ceará, ArcelorMittal Pecém, the steel plates were shipped on the ship Yasa Ruby, which left for the Port of Houston, in the United States. In all, 2,487 plates were moved during the entire operation.

“Results like this reaffirm the capacity of the Port of Pecém to carry out this type of operation. We have state-of-the-art equipment, as well as an operational team prepared to meet current demand and new business opportunities for the State of Ceará,” says Roberto de Castro, Operations Director at Complexo do Pecém.

DIFFERENTIATED OPERATION
The boarding operation was carried out by the Operational Service Providers (PSOs) – Tecer and Unilink – which operate at the Pecém port terminal. According to the manager of Port Operations at the Pecém Complex, José Alcântara, another differential of this procedure was its execution in the mixed modality, which uses, in addition to the traditional wooden support, electromagnets for faster loading of the ship.

“Loading with electromagnets improves the productivity of the operation, especially when we move heavier slabs, as was the case, and eliminates the need to use wood to stow the cargo. This new record is very important because, when we increase the amount of cargo shipped per ship, we also improve the performance of the port with the handling of larger capacity ships, points out José Alcântara.

Steel plates are currently the main cargo exported by the Port of Pecém. Produced within the Ceará ZPE area, they arrive at the port terminal by road and are shipped to more than 20 countries around the world. In the first half of this year alone, more than 1.46 million tons of slabs were moved through the Pecém Complex.
