The Port Authority of Imbituba saw robust cargo throughput results in February, posting some 762 thousand tonnes of cargo that month, up 51% year-on-year.
In February, a total of 22 vessels docked at the port, each loading an average of 34.6 thousand tonnes, indicating increased volumes per operation. Exports remained the port’s primary activity, at some 488.2 thousand tonnes, a 54% increase from January (315.3 thousand tonnes).
Out of all import and export operations, the largest volumes handled included wheat, salt, petroleum coke, soybeans, corn and soy meal, and containers. With a total growth of over 15% compared to January, highlights included wheat, salt, and petroleum coke.
“The favorable weather conditions combined with addressing the pent-up demand from 2023 brought a historic February for the Port of Imbituba,” emphasized Urbano Lopes de Sousa Netto, CEO of SCPAR Porto de Imbituba.
The predominance of exports (58.5% of the total) in the total cargo throughput was accompanied by a significant 40.3% increase in tonnage sent abroad compared to a year ago. Conversely, imports secured 34.6% of operations, with an increase of over 174% compared to the same period last year.
Coastal shipping represented approximately 5.5% of the port’s operations in February, showing a 41% reduction in cargo tonnage compared to a year prior.
In February, the majority of cargo transported via maritime routes belonged to the solid bulk segment, comprising 93% of the total shipments. Some items that stood out among all cargo types were petroleum coke, wheat, salt, soybeans, corn, soy meal, and containers. Other notable contributions to the cargo mix included sorghum and soda ash.
Also noteworthy is the shipment of 287 tonnes of components for a wind energy generation project under development in Ceará.
According to Federal Government data, import and export operations in Imbituba involved over $294 million between January and February 2024.
Thus, in 2024, the Port Authority predicts a 5% increase in port activities and over 8.5 million tonnes in cargo throughput. Additionally, as part of SCPar Porto de Imbituba’s Strategic Planning, the year should unfold investments of over R$96 million in infrastructure and technologies, with an emphasis on enhancing synergy and effectiveness in the port-city relationship.
