On June 5, the Port of Imbituba received 20 containers stuffed with donations destined for flood victims in Rio Grande do Sul. The port, due to its strategic location, serves as an alternative to the Port of Rio Grande, which is currently unable to handle the influx of donations given the floods that plagued the state.
The donations, part of the “Juntos por RS” [Together for RS} campaign conducted nationwide, were transported in the vessel Monte Sarmiento (Maersk) to Rio Grande do Sul. This humanitarian cargo, which totaled 330 tonnes of food, water, clothing, cleaning supplies, and animal feed, was managed by TECON, a tenant of the Port of Imbituba operated by Santos Brasil, with logistical support from Maersk/Aliança.
Additionally, the 28th Field Artillery Group – GAC of Criciúma played a crucial role in transshipping the donations from the Monte Sarmiento to the General Cargo Terminal (TCG) of Santos Brasil in Imbituba. The donations will be distributed in Rio Grande do Sul by postal service trucks.
The operation, coordinated by the Ministry of Ports and Airports and the Extraordinary Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic to Support the Reconstruction of Rio Grande do Sul, aims to mitigate the impact of the flooding through solidarity and societal support.
Tetsu Koike, the Program Director at the Ministry of Ports and Airports and operations coordinator, emphasized the role of the Port of Imbituba in facilitating the Federal Government’s efforts, in collaboration with the private sector, to deliver donations collected from FAB Air Bases across several capitals by sea.
Urbano Lopes de Sousa Netto, CEO of SCPAR Porto de Imbituba, reaffirmed the port authority’s commitment to aiding the process in this and future operations. “We reiterate the Government of the State of Santa Catarina’s commitment to supporting our neighboring state in solidarity with its current situation,” Urbano stated.
