Last week, GECEX (the executive management committee of CAMEX, the foreign trade chamber of the Ministry of Economy) approved reducing the import tax from 12% to 10% on sanitary napkins and diapers (NCM 9619,00.00), and from 8% to 7% for one of its main inputs – a chemical product known in the market as SAP (NCM 3906.90.44). The decision will make it possible to reduce production costs for the industry and reduce the purchase price of these items for final consumers.
“In addition to the potential positive impact on the price of goods with a relevant weight in the household budget, such as diapers and sanitary pads, this measure will contribute to the program for the protection and promotion of menstrual health, established by Law No. 14.214/2021, which seeks to solve the problem of lack of access to basic hygiene products”, highlighted the executive secretary of CAMEX, Ana Paula Repezza.
Other approved measures
GECEX also decided to extend until June 30, 2022, the validity of the GECEX Resolution No. 17/2020, which exceptionally zeroed the import tax levied on essential items to combat Covid-19. As a result, the rate will continue at 0% for a broad list of 643 products, which includes medicines, hospital equipment, personal hygiene items, and other supplies used in combating the pandemic.
The import tax for sailboats (NCM 8903.91.00) was also zeroed, with the objective of promoting the expansion of the fleet and stimulating nautical tourism in Brazil.
