Imports of bicycle components plunge in 2023

Aliança Bike has released its annual Technical Report on the Import and Export of Bicycles and Components, providing an in-depth analysis of the Brazilian bicycle market. The report, based on import, export, and wholesale trade data, identifies significant trends and changes impacting the industry.

Key Findings:

Decline in Foreign Trade Volume: The bicycle industry in Brazil experienced a 23% reduction in the total value of foreign trade transactions between 2022 and 2023.

Component Imports: There was a substantial decrease in component imports, with a $79.1 million drop in purchases from 2022 to 2023. Component imports accounted for 88% of the industry’s total transactions in 2023.

Geographic Spending Distribution: The states of Santa Catarina, Espírito Santo, and Amazonas dominated spending on international components, collectively accounting for 86% of the total, amounting to R$185.8 million.

Shifts in Ports of Entry: The Port of Santos saw a decline in its role as a key entry point for foreign components, losing 4 percentage points. In contrast, the Port of Itajaí increased its significance by 3 percentage points, emerging as the primary entry point for these products.

Frame Imports: The import quantity of bicycle frames dropped by 29% from 2022 to 2023, leading to a $19.4 million reduction in spending. China, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Portugal remain the main suppliers, representing 97% of the total investment.

Bicycle Imports: The volume of imported bicycles rose by 44% between 2022 and 2023, an increase of 21,000 units. Santa Catarina, Espírito Santo, and São Paulo remain the primary importers, sourcing mainly from China, Taiwan, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

Exports: Bicycle exports increased by 26% between 2022 and 2023. Despite a 24% reduction in the volume of exported bicycles, the value of these transactions rose by 44%, indicating a shift towards higher value-added products. Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia accounted for 82% of the exported units.

Wholesale Trade: The number of companies and jobs in the wholesale bicycle trade remained stable. Notably, the historical data on formal sector salaries shows a real increase of 19% in wages from 2012 to 2022.
