In July of this year, 2,227,392 tonnes of imported goods passed through the ports in Paraná, marking a 49% increase from the same period in 2023, when 1,494,748 tonnes were carried. Fertilizers led the way, with volumes rising from 623,831 tonnes last year to 918,321 tonnes in 2024, a 47% increase.
“The attractive commodity prices and the booming agricultural market have driven these high throughput numbers, solidifying Paraná as Brazil’s main gateway for fertilizer imports,” explained Luiz Fernando Garcia, CEO of Portos do Paraná.
Containers accounted for the second-largest import volume, rising from 332,042 TEUs to 444,546 TEUs, a 34% increase. Electronics, chemicals, and automotive products led the demand in this category.
Petroleum derivatives ranked third in import volume for the month. The commodity saw a 70% increase, climbing from 273,173 tonnes in 2023 to 465,085 tonnes in 2024.
“The significant import numbers in July reflect a trend we’ve observed throughout the year,” noted Gabriel Vieira, Director of Operations at Portos do Paraná. From January to July this year, imports rose from 12,249,836 tonnes in 2023 to 14,746,500 tonnes in 2024, a 20% increase.
“The forecast for fertilizer imports remains strong, given the expectation of a good performance in the upcoming harvest, which will drive even higher demand from producers,” added the Director of Operations.
