Wheat flour and oat bran exports increased significantly at the Port of Rio Grande in 2020. That was what Wilson Sons registered at Tecon Rio Grande, the container terminal at the Port of Rio Grande. Wheat flour totaled 147 exported containers or 194 TEU, a total of 3,800 tons, with the main destination being Venezuela. The last movement of goods through Tecon Rio Grande had been in 2017 when only eight containers left the terminal.
Coastal shipping exports of wheat flour also grew. There were 275 containers (546 TEU), corresponding to 7,700 tons shipped to Pernambuco and Alagoas. Compared to 2019, the volume of goods shipped by cabotage almost tripled.
Last year, 48 containers (80 TEU) of oat bran, the equivalent of 1,200 tonnes, were also exported to countries in Latin America, such as Chile, Colombia, and Costa Rica. In 2019, the grain derivative moved only one container.
The solid performance of both products follows the pace of food movement via Tecon Rio Grande, where more than 20 segments grew 14% compared to 2019. There were 35,394 containers, 27% of the terminal’s total exports, with an emphasis on rice, pork, and beef. The cargoes reached more than one hundred destinations, such as China, Saudi Arabia, Peru, the United States, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates.
