Indian sailors banned from Chinese waters

The Indian Sailors’ Union and the General Workers Union have reported that China is unofficially banning Indian sailors from its waters.
According to the entities, the entry of any vessel that has Indian sailors on board is currently prohibited, regardless of the vessel type. The Indian sailors ask for the help of the Indian Government to save thousands of their jobs.
In a statement sent to the Ministry of Ports, Navigation and Waterways, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India, the entities explained that the attitude of the Government of China directly affects around 20,000 sailors.
China’s move clearly seeks to protect its own sailors in China waters. However, according to Indian authorities, more than 80% of sailors worldwide originate from India, and removing them all from vessels would mean stopping world shipping, since it would collapse.
The ban has not been officially communicated to any authority but is ongoing in practice. And it’s not the first time this has happened. In 2020 the same situation occurred due to problems between China and Australia, which left more than 50 ships stranded outside Chinese waters.
Chinese authorities always allege issues related to COVID-19, however, in practice, according to Indian entities, this is not quite the case.
