The government of Indonesia increased its year-long import quota for Brazilian beef from 20,000 to 100,000. The measure, which is in effect until December 31, this year, applies to 20 national meat producers that possess halal certification and adhere to the requirements of the Asian country’s Islamic laws. The quota increase has already been reported to the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, which has confirmed the information to Valor.
The list of Brazilian units that will be able to access to sell to Indonesia under the import quota is made of four JBS-owned units in Goiânia, Marabá, São Miguel do Guaporé, and Vilhena; six are Minerva plants located in Rolim de Moura, Palmeira de Goiás, Mirassol D’Oeste, Araguaína, José Bonifácio, and Janaúba; three belong to Marfrig, located in Tangará da Serra, Promissão, and Chupinguaia.
Also on the list are the cold storage units Frigon, in Jaru, Maxi Beef, in Carlos Chagas, Astra, in Cruzeiro do Oeste, Barra Mansa, located in Sertãozinho, Mercúrio, in Xinguara, Frigol, in Água Azul do Norte, and Vale Grande, in Matupá.
Brazil has 21 meatpackers authorized to export beef to Indonesia – only the Marfrig unit located in Várzea Grande was left out this time. In addition, this year, the Asian country granted licenses to 11 new plants, which increased the possibility for Brazilian companies to expand their sales to Indonesia.
In 2019, when Indonesia first opened its market to Brazilian beef, meat producers exported 3,500 tonnes (US$15.1 million) to the country. In 2020, there were 4 thousand tonnes (US$ 15.6 million), and in 2021, 16.6 thousand tonnes (US$ 87.9 million). Last year, sales to Indonesia reached 20,400 tonnes, which generated US$ 110.1 million.
Indonesia imports around 250,000 tonnes of beef a year. The country’s leading beef provider is Australia.
A guidance note sent by the Ministry of Agriculture of Indonesia to the Ministry of Commerce of the country on March 21 shows that the quota for importing frozen, boneless, and fat-free beef will meet the demand of the company PT. Berdikari. The company belongs to Bumn Food, the Indonesian government’s food holding company based in Jakarta, the country’s capital.
