Tuna exports from Rio Grande do Norte have increased during the last decade. In 2021, the state exported 1,400 tonnes of fish, generating BRL 14 million in revenue. From January through April of this year, 782 tonnes (US$ 7 million) were shipped, a 30% increase over the previous year. The information comes from the Rio Grande do Norte Federation of Industries (Fiern) and the state’s International Business Center (CIN).
International scenario
Brazil, a member since 1969, actively participates in the International Commission for the Conservation of Tuna in the Atlantic (ICCAT). Several recommendations, including catch quotas, effort limitation measures, and tuna fishing control, are proposed at this discussion forum for better resource management.
Fish exports from Brazil to the European Union have been suspended since 2017 after the bloc raised questions after an audit mission. However, considering the intention of resuming exports, the Secretariat of Aquaculture and Fisheries (SAP/MAPA) has been working together with the Secretariat of Agricultural Defense (SDA/MAPA) in the elaboration and implementation of hygienic control measures applied to the national fish production chain, in compliance with the recommendations of the European Community.
