Industry sees risk of shortage of PET resin for packaging in the country

Brazilian manufacturers of plastic bottles and packaging see the risk of a shortage of PET in the domestic market after a fire has suspended the local operation of the main producer of the resin, Indorama Ventures. To circumvent potential shortages and avoid additional cost pressures, the plastics industry last week asked the government to reduce the import tax on PET resin.
According to Valor, large suppliers of soft drinks, juices, and water in the country have expressed growing concern with the possibility of a lack of PET bottles and an increase in prices for preform manufacturers and transformers. The resin is also widely used in shampoo and conditioner packaging, and in the production of laminated films for food and produce trays, among others.
Indorama suspended operations at the PET plant located in the Port of Suape (PE) after a major fire between August 14 and 15, and resin production has not yet resumed. The incident left no injuries.
According to market sources, the company’s initial forecast was for a resumption in October, but this deadline had already been revised for November.
