Inland transportation finishes quarter with positive balance

For the third month in a row, cargo transportation in inland navigation in Brazil presented a positive balance. The data is from the Waterway Statistics of the National Agency of Waterway Transport (ANTAQ).

The survey shows that among the national inland terminals, 9.3 million tons were transported in the first quarter of the year, representing an increase of 4.12% compared to the same period in 2022.

Highlights include the Paraguay and South Atlantic hydrographic regions that transported 1.57 million tons (+81%) and 1.2 million tons (+10%) during the first three months of the year.

The Amazon and Tocantins-Araguaia regions registered 6.44 million tons transported (-2.2%) and 1.96 million tons transported (-20.6%), respectively.

The commodity that showed the highest percentage growth between January and March 2023 was iron ore. In the first quarter, 1.36 million tons of the mineral were transported between inland ports, which represented an increase of 56.36% compared to last year.

The Private Use Terminal (TUP) that stood out in handling was the Granel Química Ladário Ltda (MT), with 660 thousand tons handled, representing an increase of 240% compared to the same period last year.

However, the inland port facility that handled the most cargo in this period was the Hidrovias do Brasil Miritituba Terminal, which registered 1.4 million tons of cargo held in inland terminals in the first three months of the year (a positive variation of 17.6% compared with the same period in 2022).

The Port of Porto Velho (RO) was the last highlight of facilities handling inland navigation with 548 thousand tons, representing a growth of 121.1% compared with the first quarter of last year.

March

In the month of March, 3.72 million tons were transported between terminals on inland waterways, representing an increase of 4.07% compared with the same period of the previous year.

Soy transportation was the highlight of the month with 1.96 million tons transported, portraying a positive variation of 19.2% when compared with the same month of 2022.

The highlight hydrographic region was Paraguay, which transported more than 752 thousand tons in March, a comparative increase of 59%.
