Rodrigo Pacheco, the president of the Brazilian Congress, has extended four interim measures (MP) for an additional 60 days, including the decision to allow rice imports. This decision was published in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU) on Thursday, June 27.
One of the extended measures is MP No. 1,217, which allows the National Supply Company (Conab) to import processed or paddy rice. This measure aims to address the social and economic impacts of extreme weather events in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The auction organized under these terms was canceled amid fraud suspicions, leading to the resignation of Neri Geller, the Secretary of Agricultural Policy at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, and Thiago José dos Santos, the Director of Operations and Supply at Conab.
Rice isn’t a traditional import product of Brazil. See below the import volume recorded from Jan 2021 and Mar 2024. The data is from DataLiner.

Additionally, MP No. 1,215, which allows for the extension of fixed-term contracts within the Health Ministry, has been extended. MP No. 1,216, which authorizes the federal Executive Branch to provide economic subsidies to borrowers who incurred material losses due to extreme weather events in April and May 2024, has also been extended.
The fourth measure, MP No. 1,218, issued on May 11, 2024, has been extended as well. This measure allocates extraordinary credit of R$12.179 billion to support Executive Branch bodies, Union Financial Charges, and Official Credit Operations.
