Iquique Port hosts Argentine delegation looking into exporting shipments to Asia and US

Executives from the Iquique Port Company (EPI) met with a delegation from the La Rioja province in Argentina, who visited the Chilean port to familiarize themselves with local operations and thoroughly understand cargo transportation opportunities to access markets in Asia and the US West Coast.
“It’s important to highlight the potential of our port as a real alternative to boost business and facilitate trade in South America. Argentina, especially La Rioja, is seeking new options for exports, and clearly, northern Chile, especially Iquique, is a viable option,” commented Rubén Castro, general manager of EPI.
It’s worth noting that crossing restrictions on the Panama Canal for bulk cargo, coupled with high costs and lead time in Atlantic maritime routes, lead areas like La Rioja to seek operational alternatives.
In this regard, Gustavo Molina, an Argentine entrepreneur who was part of the delegation, emphasized that “the Port of Iquique represents an opportunity to connect logistical corridors. In our case, we want to promote joint efforts to transport our commodities alongside neighboring countries like Uruguay and Paraguay.”
Thus, the Port of Iquique emerges as an alternative that allows bypassing the Panama Canal, thanks to its location with access to markets of interest to the La Rioja delegation.
It’s worth noting that La Rioja is a province in northwest Argentina that extends to the Andes Mountains, with an estimated 1,075-kilometer journey connecting it to Iquique and thus an outlet to the Pacific Ocean.
