From January to December 2023, the Port of Itaguaí, under the administration of PortosRio, recorded 55.8 million tonnes in throughput cargo. The volume represents the third-best performance among Brazilian public ports last year, trailing only behind the Ports of Santos and Paranaguá. Compared to the previous year, 2022, there was a significant increase of 5.2 million tonnes, representing a growth of 10.2%. The data, released this month, is part of the 2023 Waterborne Transport Panel of the National Waterway Transportation Agency (ANTAQ).
The regulatory agency’s study reveals that iron ore was the most tranported cargo by the national port sector in 2023, accounting for 30% of the total. The Port of Itaguaí remains prominent as the main public port in the ore sector, representing 13.1% of the total movement among Brazilian ports.
ANTAQ’s Waterborne Transport Panel is an online public utility tool for consulting updated data from the waterborne freight market, providing information on port movement, long-haul and coastal navigation, ship dockings, tariffs, and indicators.
