Itaguaí Port ups operational efficiency with new 18.3 meters draft

The Port of Itaguaí has recently improved its operational capabilities by increasing its maximum depth from 17.8 meters to 18.3 meters in its main channel and the channel of Ilha das Cabras. The first vessel to take advantage of this upgrade was the bulk carrier, “Golden Amreen,” which docked at the Porto Sudeste terminal on April 19th.
According to Julia Crisóstomo, the Waterway Access Manager at the Port of Itaguaí, the expansion was made possible after the Rio de Janeiro Port Authority authorized the increase in operational depths, which came into effect on April 10th with the publication of a new ordinance that changed the register of depths for the port complex’s channels and basins. In addition, completing rock removal and maintenance dredging works last year contributed to the successful deepening of the port.
The Superintendent of Port Management for Itaguaí and Angra dos Reis of PortosRio, Alexandre Neves, emphasized that the new depths will provide better navigational safety conditions and increase operational efficiency. Neves also highlighted that the Port Authority’s ongoing projects to improve maritime infrastructure will allow the Sepetiba Bay Port Complex, which includes the Port of Itaguaí and associated private terminals, to strengthen its competitiveness in the industry.
