Itajaí and Navegantes’ basin witness thousandth vessel maneuver

The thousandth vessel maneuver recorded in the Maneuvering Basin of the Itajaí and Navegantes Port Complex on the northern coast of Santa Catarina is to occur on September 1st, with a vessel scheduled to berth at Portonave. The MSC vessel Agrigento should dock in the afternoon to load and unload containers.
Currently, Itajaí and Navegantes can accommodate ships of up to 350 meters, but the objective is that, in the future, this capacity will be expanded to vessels of up to 400 meters by 59 meters beam (width).
Astern propulsion
Previously unprecedented, the first astern propulsion maneuver in Brazi was carried out in 2019 by the Maltese-flagged vessel Valor, 300 meters long and 48.3 meters wide. The ship also docked at Portonave.
An astern propulsion maneuver is usually employed to allow the simultaneous berthing of ships both in Itajaí and Navegantes.
Since the terminals face each other and are only 400 meters apart, it wasn’t possible to dock two ships at once if one of the ports had occupied berths before constructing the new Maneuvering Basin.
Historic mooring
In June 2020, the largest container ship that has ever sailed on the Brazilian Coast, APL Paris, docked at the Navegantes terminal, the only port in Brazil to receive the call. The massive vessel measured 347m in length and 45.2m in width.
