Itajaí and Navegantes Port Complex set new handling record

In May, the Itajaí and Navegantes Port Complex recorded 99 stopovers (berths) and a 54% increase in handling in tons compared to May of the previous year, achieving the highest handling level ever recorded. The numbers show 1,842,647 tons of cargo handled against 1,194,226 tons in the same period last year.

In container handling, APM Terminals (lessee company of the port of Itajaí – berths 01 and 02), grew by 12%, handling 51,293 TEU against 45,646 TEU in May 2020. In the same month, there was a significant increase in tons handled, totaling 580,820 t  against 491,967 t in the same period last year,  an increase of 18%.

The accumulated movement of the year at the public pier/port (berths 03 and 04), and at the APM terminals berths reached the level of 2,621,546 tons during 168 vessel calls compared to 2,398,329 tons during 202 calls in the same period of the previous year (January to May), a growth of 9% in the comparison.

In May, the Portonave terminal (Porto de Navegantes), recorded a total cargo handling of 1,216,652 tons during 55 vessel calls, raising the accumulated movement for the year to 257 stops and 5,102,168 tons – a 47% growth in relation to the same period of the previous year when 3,481,808 tons were handled during 216 vessel calls. The other private terminals also registered significant vessel and cargo activity during the month of May.

The accumulated movement of the year (January to May) in the Port Complex of Itajaí and Navegantes totaled 456 vessel calls (berths) with 7,856,316 tons. This demonstrates growth of 32% in relation to the same period of the previous year when 436 stopovers were carried out carrying  5,936,856 tons since the number of stopovers performed showed a growth of 5% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Of the total trade flow, 55% was due to exports and 45% was due to imports. We hope to maintain these levels in June. If we can, then we will close the semester with better growth than the first semester of 2020,” highlights Heder Cassiano Moritz, General Director of Logistics Operations of the Superintendence of the Port of Itajaí.

The main exports recorded were frozen chicken (29.9%), meat (beef and pork – 33.5%), wood and derivatives (111.2%), mechanical and electronics (51.8%), food in general (25.4%), apples (80.3%), and tobacco (3.9%). The most significant imports in May were mechanics and electronics (111.7%), chemical products (122.6%), various textiles (113.6%), plastics and rubbers (130.8%), and food general (23.3%).

The Port of Itajaí contributed  4.2% towards Brazil’s trade flow and 60.7% towards the trade flow of the state of Santa Catarina.
