Itajaí container imports grow 42% YTD

The Port of Itajaí (public berths and APM Terminals) recorded a 42% increase in the handling of full containers imported in the first two months of 2021. In January and February, 36,399 TEU were handled compared with 25,600 TEU in the same period in 2020.
For Héder Cassiano Moritz, Director of Logistics Operations at Port of Itajaí, this increase is expressive, mainly due to the commercial representativeness of this movement.
“In these first two months of 2021, we had a drop in the handling of empty containers. Although the replacement of these containers is important because it meets a market need, the container with cargo is what generates the economic movement, in the commercial sense”.
Itajaí represents 5.1% of the Brazilian trade flow and 63.6% of the Santa Catarina trade flow.
In February, a new handling record was set in the Itajaí and Navegantes port complex.
At the Itajaí and Navegantes port complex, the 140,141 TEU handled in February 2021 set a new all-time handling record. The number exceeds the record set in November 2020, which was 139,451 TEU.
Compared to February of the previous year, during which 107,130 TEU were handled, the indices indicate a growth of 31%. In tonnage, the growth was 33%, with a record of 1,572,585 tons in 2021 against 1,178,463 tons handled in the same period of 2020.
Portonave also set a new record. Handling 100,221 TEU, the Private Use Terminal (TUP) beat the former record set in December 2020, which was 91,972 TEU.
Terminal handling registered a 59% growth in containers and 62% in tonnage. Portonave handled 100,221 TEUs and 1,066,422 tons in 2021 compared to 78,470 TEU and 664,624 tons in February 2020.
The Port of Itajaí (public berths and APM Terminals) registered 39,920 TEU and 483,036 tons handled. The indices indicate a 10% drop in TEU and a 3% drop in tonnage when compared to the same period last year, in which 107,130 TEU and 1,178,463 tons were handled.
“Despite the re-filling of empty containers being associated with the shipowner’s logistics, the low turnover – felt mainly by the refrigerated cargo sector – has an impact on our general movement”, recalls Heder.
The Teporti terminal registered five vessel calls, moving 18,127 tons. Poly Terminais registered one vessel call handling 5,000 tons.
Exports were responsible for 52% of the loads, with chicken, meat, and wood and its derivatives being the main products leaving the country. In imports, which accounted for 48% of the cargo handled at the complex, the main products were mechanical and electronic, chemical, textile, and other products.
