Itajaí fights to maintain authority over municipal port

The Port of Itajaí has mobilized the Santa Catarina population in favor of the public and municipal port authority. In recent months, the movement has gained strength in the effort to maintain the current management model. The current model is already used in major global ports, leading to positive results and growth. The municipality of Itajaí has embraced the initiative and receives support from various economic sectors in the city, state, and country.
The movement intensified with the municipality’s approaching end of the concession for the administration of the port on December 31, 2022. With this, the terminal entered the federal government’s privatization plan which announced the possibility of privatizing 100% of the port. The change may negatively impact and compromise economic, commercial, and social development throughout Santa Catarina, according to the city council.
To maintain municipal management, the administration of the Port of Itajaí prepared the action plan entitled “Together for Our Port”, which aims to guarantee a new delegation agreement for another 25 years, making the municipalization effective until 2048. The expectation is that the entire port area and the operation will be private, but that the port authority will remain public and municipal.
