The Itajaí Port Complex saw an increase across all cargo throughput metrics in January 2025 compared to the same month last year. Including both public facilities and private terminals, total throughput rose 26% to 1.27 million tonnes, up from just over one million tonnes in January 2024.
According to the president of Santos Port Authority (APS), which manages the public infrastructure at the Port of Itajaí, the results reflect a synergy between efficient public administration and private-sector performance. “January’s growth is the result of strong cooperation among the Itajaí and Navegantes port communities, their municipal administrations, and the technical public management of APS-Itajaí,” he noted. “We have opened up port administration to local participation, including retaining existing employees, which has helped drive significant progress in restoring the port’s prominence,” said Pomini.
Cruise Ship Calls Stand Out at Itajaí’s Public Berth
A key highlight at the public berth of the Port of Itajaí was the arrival of cruise ships. Of the 17 vessel calls in January, 13 were passenger ships, while the remaining included two general cargo vessels, one container ship, and one ro-ro (vehicle carrier). In light of this, APS-Itajaí’s decision to allow general cargo to be handled via land transportation aims to expand freight operations while continuing to accommodate cruise ships.
Cargo throughput at the public berth totaled 47,900 tonnes, marking a 28% increase from the 37,400 tonnes handled in January 2024. Unlike the complex as a whole, the Port of Itajaí handles more exports than imports. Combined throughput from leased areas and common-use terminals reached 185,400 tonnes for exports versus 174,500 tonnes for imports.
Complex-Wide Totals
Of the 1.27 million tonnes handled across the entire port complex, 54% (690,700 tonnes) were imports, while exports accounted for 46% (581,600 tonnes). Both segments saw a year-on-year increase of roughly 26%.
Containerized cargo throughput rose 21%, reaching 117,800 TEUs in January 2025, compared to 97,000 TEUs in the same month last year.
The chart below shows the top cargoes exported in containers throughout 2024 at the Port of Itajaí, according to DataLiner data – a Datamar foreign trade intelligence service.

The Port of Itajaí itself handled 359,900 tonnes, while private-use terminals accounted for 912,400 tonnes. The total number of vessel calls at the port complex in January stood at 102, a 28% rise from the 80 calls recorded in 2024. Of these, 51 were deep-sea vessels.
