Week 202427

The end of an 18-month hiatus is set to come on July 6th, when the Port of Itajaí will see the first containership dock in its berths since APM Terminals terminated its contract with the city. According to the Itajaí Pilots website, which oversees docking and undocking operations at the Itajaí and Navegantes Port Complex, the ship Star Lysefjord is scheduled to depart on July 9th.

The Star Lysefjord will dock at berths 3 and 4, triggering a special operation. Berths 1 and 2, recently acquired by JBS/Seara for container operations, are still in the customs bonding phase with regulatory agencies in a process that takes approximately 45 days.

The chart below compares container exports and imports at the Port of Itajaí from January 2019 and December 2022, the period in which container operations began to dwindle at the port. The data is from DataLiner.

The Norwegian-flagged freighter Star Lysefjord, which is 204 meters long, will transport two thousand vehicles from the Chinese manufacturer BYD, stuffed in 700 containers. Unlike other operations involving vehicles on berths 3 and 4 – administered by SC Portos – these cars will be carted in containers. The ship, which carries both containerized and non-containerized cargo, is currently sailing south of the African continent.

The arrival of the Star Lysefjord does not indicate a permanent shipping line for the Port of Itajaí.
