Itapoá acquires gondola-model lashing cage for portainers

Itapoá will be the first port terminal in Brazil to have a gondola lashing cage. The equipment is affixed to portainers to secure the safety of operations assistants responsible for ensuring containers won’t move while onboard.

In addition to enhancing safety, the lashing cage will maximize operating speed by up to 40%.

The Tec Container equipment, supplied in Brazil by Rimac, weighs six tons. The cage, which comprises two lateral platforms where the professionals are positioned, may be opened between 23 and 45 feet, or roughly 7.5 and 15 meters. Allows up to two professionals on each side of the gondola (500kg capacity), resulting in greater agility and safety during operations.

Investment in infrastructure

In April 2022, Itapoá acquired two new Reach Stacker forklifts used in operations in the terminal’s yard. The objective is to improve the service between the ship and the yard, complementing the operations with the RTG, a mobile crane used inside ports to move and stack containers.

The Kalmar brand equipment can lift tons on spreaders (a device attached to the machine to lift containers) and has a series of technologies that ensure operator safety. The port already owned three similar equipment.

Five additional RTGs, or mobile cranes on wheels, were also purchased for use in the yard. The port already has 17 of these ZPMC-branded pieces of equipment, but the newest ones will be controlled remotely – Porto Itapoá will be the first in Brazil to have this technology. These machines will be delivered in January 2023.

Another significant purchase is the nine terminal tractor trucks (TTs) that will arrive in July, in addition to the nine buggies, the TT “carts” that are already at the port. The trucks join Rucker’s fleet of 40 vehicles, each of which can load 65 tons, or the equivalent of two 20-foot containers.
